Question by Shrek: What is the best cancer treatment center? Do they take insurance or it comes out of pocket? Please help?
I just found out my dad has cancer and is going to get surgey this week. What is the best place to help cancer? Is there any in Massachusetts? Does insurance pay for that type of places or does the patient pay? I will get money or get a loan or something I don’t care I am just wondering how it works. Do you just call and make an appointment? Is it usually a long wait? I don’t kno what kind he had bc my parents just told me today and I am afraid to ask. I am 18 so if there is anything else I can do to help him I will do it if you guys can think of anything.

Cancer treatment is highly standardized across America. Patients in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Cleveland have access to the same surgical procedures, chemotherapy drugs, and radiation protocols. Any large hospital with an oncology department provides identical care as every other hospital.

When you hear about “best hospitals” what they are really talking about is best research facilities. There is an elite group of hospitals where most of the research into new cancer treatments happen.

Massachusetts has many excellent hospitals with outstanding oncology departments. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Mass General Hospital in Boston are perhaps the best known. Your father can receive equally excellent care at UMass Worcester and other regional facilities.

Hopefully, your father has private medical insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare to fund his treatment. Massachusetts was the pioneer in requiring all residents to have health insurance, so if he lives there then he should have some level of coverage. Cancer care is typically quite expensive, depending upon the type of cancer and recommended treatment plan.

As an 18-year-old, there is little you can do financially for your father, but a lot you can do in terms of physical and emotional support. Mow the lawn, take out the trash, and do all of the jobs that need to get done at your parent’s home. Volunteer to help with other tasks as they come up. Your father’s illness is an opportunity for you to be an asset to your family. Help wherever and whenever you can.

Best wishes that your Dad has a good long term outcome.
